The classic Slioch Horseshoe Hill Race was back, and as brutal as ever, after a long hiatus from the calendar. Fortuitously, the race had been moved to the Sunday to avoid clashing with the Celtman triathlon, which proved a massive stroke of luck, with the weather clearing to give excellent conditions for the race – if anything a little too hot in the end.
The first runner home was Robin Regan of Inverness Harriers in an impressive time of 2.05.14, followed by the closely paired Robin Downie (Lochaber AC) in 2.10.31 and Csoban Balogh (Carnethy) 2.10.32.
In the women’s race, first place was taken by Catriona Graves of Highland Hill Runners in 2.30.24, followed by Ellen Downs of (Westerlands CCC) in 2.32.21 and Claire White (Unattached) in 2.38.53.
First Open V40 was Ewan Thorburn of Lochaber AC (2.28.44), with the first Female V40 prize won by Karen Frake of Highland Hill Runners (4.09.58).
First Open V50 was Nick Carter of Highland Hill Runners in a speedy 2.46.55. The first Female V50 was Frances Britain of Forres Harriers in 4.38.59.
First Open V60 was Duncan Ball of Penicuik Harriers (3.30.52), with the first Female V60 won by Fabienne Thompson of Lomond Hill Runners (3.53.33).
The Open team prize was won by the Lochaber AC team of Robin Downie, Huw Oliver and Ewan Thorburn.
The Female team Prize was won by the Highland Hill Runners team of Catriona Graves, Sarah Crowsley and Katie Wilson.
Thanks to all the marshals and helpers on the day, and the landowners for letting us put the race on again. All profits from this year’s race are being donated to Àban, an outdoor charity based in Inverness, that helps youngsters access the outdoors that often wouldn’t have the opportunity otherwise. They also have an excellent outdoor charity shop on eBay and Vinted that is well worth a visit: https://aban.scot/gear-hub
